You are chosen..

How many times do you think God is calling you to do stuff, but think of excuse after excuse?

BUT I DON'T COME FROM A PERFECT FAMILY...
Neither did Jesus.  Think about it, read the start of Matthew the genealogy of Christ's earthly family.  The only perfect person in that family is Jesus.  Keep reading through the Bible, it is story after story about people in his genealogy that struggled, but still were great warriors of faith.

I'M NOT OLD ENOUGH....
Look at David, read 1 Samuel 16:8-13.  Jesse put all his sons in front of Samuel, except his youngest.  He left David out with the sheep.  Jesse didn't think he would choose his youngest son, but oh was he wrong.

I NOT PRETTY ENOUGH, TALL ENOUGH.....
Again, look at David.  1 Samuel 16:7 "But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or his statue, because I have rejected him.  Man does not see what the Lord sees, for man sees what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart."

I AM SCARED....
Read Luke 12:7 "Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.  Don't be afraid, you are worth more than many sparrows.

How often do we feel like God is calling us, but let our fears stop us.  Can you imagine is we jumped all in? Can you imagine if we completely let go and let The Holy Spirit fill us?  Lets's go MOVE MOUNTAINS.

Today is National Day of Prayer. I think this idea and day is absolutely fabulous, and wanted to include a little history behind it, as well as provide links in case you wanted to get more involved for next year!

Quote from National Day of Prayer.org site-

"The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible."

Y'all, how great is that? Below is the 2015 Theme & Verse- (again, quoting from  National Day of Prayer.org site)

 "2015 Theme and Verse

The 64th annual National Day of Prayer, May 7, 2015, will have profound significance for our country.  It is an unprecedented opportunity to see the Lord’s healing and renewing power made manifest as we call on citizens to humbly come before His throne. Our theme for 2015 is Lord, Hear Our Cry, emphasizing the need for individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in the unfailing character of their Creator, who is sovereign over all governments, authorities, and men.  To further highlight our theme, we’ve chosen I Kings 8:28 as our Scripture for this year:  “Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day.”
For the May 7th observances, Dr. Jack Graham, the 2015 Honorary Chairman, wrote a special prayer to be simultaneously read throughout the nation at noon (EDT).  This recitation will create a huge wave of prayer, flowing from one coast to the other, illustrating the unity of God’s people and acknowledging His dominion over the circumstances facing us.  Millions of people will gather to pray at thousands of events facilitated by our volunteer coordinators and people just like you!  We hope you’ll join with our staff again as we seek to bring more communities than ever before together in prayer.  As a way of assisting you, we have assembled a variety of resources that describe how to organize and publicize citywide prayer breakfasts, worship services, and rallies.  These materials also present creative ideas geared toward helping individuals and families to establish meaningful devotional times.  If you have any questions after reviewing these items, please don’t hesitate to contact our NDP staff at (800) 444-8828.  We would count it a privilege to lend a hand in whatever manner we are able.
At this crucial time for our nation, we can do nothing more important than pray.  Thank you in advance for making this spiritual discipline a personal priority and for standing with us as we encourage others to incorporate prayer in their lives.  The Lord has graciously anointed our efforts, empowering them to touch and change many hearts and lives.  We look forward to seeing His hand move across our land in exciting ways each May in response to our petitions!  In closing, we ask that you prayerfully consider becoming a volunteer in your church or community to lead a National Day of Prayer gathering. May the Lord’s peace fill your heart as you rest in Him throughout the days ahead.

This year's prayer, say it with me-

"Heavenly Father,
We come to You in the Name that is above every name—Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Our hearts cry out to You.
Knowing that You are a prayer-answering, faithful God—the One we trust in times like these—we ask that You renew our spirits, revive our churches, and heal our land.
We repent of our sins and ask for Your grace and power to save us. Hear our cry, oh God, and pour out Your Spirit upon us that we may walk in obedience to Your Word.
We are desperate for Your tender mercies. We are broken and humbled before You.
Forgive us, and in the power of Your great love, lift us up to live in Your righteousness.
We pray for our beloved nation. May we repent and return to You and be a light to the nations. And we pray for our leaders and ask that You give them wisdom and faith to follow You.
Preserve and protect us, for You are our refuge and only hope.
Deliver us from all fears except to fear You, and may we courageously stand in the Truth that sets us free.
We pray with expectant faith and grateful hearts.
In Jesus’ name, our Savior.
Amen.
– 2015 National Prayer by Dr. Jack Graham"

Thank you for participating! There are other links that you can go to if you want to be more involved than just saying the prayer every year. Please check out this awesome organization! Prayer changes everything!

The Rear View Mirror

I wrote a post last week about things that change the older I get. Today, I'm going to expound upon one of the things I listed; "The older I get, the more I realize that I am not running the show."

I would like to think this is how I feel. This is how I should feel. The more I mature, the more I should see God working in my life and trust Him with my live. The More i should realize he is "running the show" and I should one, stop worrying about things and two, not fret when things don't go my way.

I decided to pick a "word of the year" this year along with most of blog land. My word is TRUST, because this year I want to work on being more trusting. A big part of that is trusting God.

I am trying to trust God when things don't go the way I planned. I am trying to trust God when big decisions come my way. I am trying to trust God when it comes to my future. But it isn't proving very easy.

For 24 years of my life I've been a worrier. I worry about what to wear, what to say, about school and work, about packing for a trip, or cleaning and preparing for guests. I basically worry myself to the point of headache over anything outside of normal everyday life. And yet I will still try to tackle it myself without God's (or any one's) help. It's a hard habit to break.

I want to give my worries over to God, and I want that to be my first  reaction. As soon as something potentially worrisome comes up, I try to pray about it and take the weight from my shoulders and put it on His. God encourages this. Psalm 55:22 says "Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you..." (ESV).

So yes, "The older I get, the surer I am that I'm not running the show." Consciously, I know that God runs the show, and as I get older, it gets easier to look back and see how God has worked in my life. I love the quote "It's sometimes easier to see God through the rear view mirror than the windshield." I am not sure who said it first, but there is a lot of truth to it.
It's sometimes easier to see God through the rear-view mirror than the windshield
Once upon a time, I was about to marry Pearson. I was working full time in my first post-college job for a company in Georgia. Pearson had just found out that he had been accepted to grad school at The Ohio State University and we decided we would move to Columbus after we got married. I started looking for a job here. I put up profiles on Monster.com, LinkedIn, and other places. I updated my resume to the best it could be, and I searched for anything remotely in my field.

Three months later, I still had zero bites. I was starting to get worried. I had little experience, the economy was in a recession, and nobody seemed to want to interview me if I couldn't be there physically. It was tough since I was in Georgia and wouldn't be able to see anyone in my new job till we moved there. I was so scared. What if I couldn't get a job? There is no way we could both live off of Pearson's school stipend. We couldn't rely much on family or friends to help until I found something since we wouldn't be living anywhere near them. What were we going to do?
The shirt I made after Pearson got into OSU
Then, one day, my manager called me into his office. He informed me that he didn't want to lose me and he talked to the president of the company. They were going to let me work remote from Ohio. Every day! This meant that I could stop worrying about finding a job. It meant I wouldn't have to start fresh with a company in a new place where I knew nobody. It meant I could work in my pajamas every day. And lastly, it meant I was valuable to the company! They wanted me!

What I couldn't get out of my head, though, was "What if I had landed a job in Columbus?" I probably would have told my manager no and then go blindly into this job knowing I could have kept my old one. Maybe the new job would be awful. Who knows? Or I would have had to tell my new job never mind. Talk about an awkward conversation. Looking back, I can see God's hand in not allowing me to land a job. At the time I couldn't see it, but boy do I now.

There are so many other stories like this in my life. When I was a Freshman in college, I didn't make the choir. I was crushed. But since I didn't make choir, I was able to do other things like play on the women's Ultimate Frisbee team. I met a lot of awesome people and was blessed in so many ways by that opportunity. Similarly, I didn't get into asocial club my Freshman year either (I tried again and got it Sophomore year). But I met a bunch of my best friends that year. I am willing to bet that if I had gotten into a club, I wouldn't have been a part of "our group" that made up most of our wedding party later. And lastly, if Pearson and I never broke up, I might still not know the many life lessons that I learned during those 2 weeks!

See? God does run the show. Now if only I could see that in the here and now. I mean I may not always know the reasons, but I should use these examples as a means to relax and trust that God has everything under control.

How do you see God's hand when you look back on your life?
Thanks for reading!

Becoming The Truth

As Jesus drew more to the end of His life on earth, His Spirit became more troubled. He had always known how His end was going to be--the suffering He'd encounter and the brutality with which He was going to be killed. How does a man live with that kind of weight on Him? Not only was He going to die like that, He KNEW it! Apart from this horrible end to His life, He had another major concern.

Even though His death was going to be brought about by the most cruel means, He knew His Father awaited Him with glory, such that at the mention of His Name, every knee will bow (Philippians 2:10). What troubled Him the most was those He was leaving behind. These people were His friends. He had shared a lot of beautiful memories with them, He had watched them grow in their desire to know and obey God. His heart was torn for them because He knew what the world had in store for them and all those who will come to believe in Him later on.

Being so grieved, He turned to do the one thing that has always worked, pray. He poured His heart out to God the Father concerning His sheep. While He prayed, He said,

Sanctify them [purify, consecrate, separate them for Yourself, make them holy] by the Truth; Your Word is Truth. - John 17:17, Amp.

This world is basically a no-comfort-zone for anyone who believes in Jesus. The world system is corrupt, it's dirty, evil and filled with disgusting/horrible stains of darkness. And Jesus was asking the Father to separate His friends from the world, to keep them apart; somehow, He knew the world could influence them to go astray and forget all that He taught them while He was with them and He pleaded, oh God, make them holy, make them righteous, keep them holy.

In praying, He made known how we can be made holy...the Word. The world system is a pack full of lies, so Jesus knew the antidote would be the Truth found in the Word of God. Every spoken word of God is true, every word written down in the scripture was inspired by the Holy Spirit of God and therefore, is true.

The system that grieved the Lord's heart then is still in place today. Fortunately, the antidote too is still available and highly potent.

But why did Jesus ask the Father to sanctify us with the Truth when we can easily pick up the bible to read? It's because we could never understand it on our own. We need to be taught and the eyes of our mind enlightened, so that we can come to an understanding of the Word. Secondly, we cannot implement/put into practice what the Word teaches us on our own, we need God's strength to become doers of the Word.

As much as we desire to please God, let us not forget that it is something we could never achieve on our own. So many a time, we think we can live a faultless life by our own strength and when we fail, we turn in on ourselves and hate on us because we failed and on God because He let us fail. Whereas the truth is we didn't ALLOW Him to sanctify us; rather, we sought to sanctify ourselves. We forget we are still IN the world, we still have the flesh to battle with and we forget that our human strength does not equal the power of darkness. We must stop trying and start letting God have His way in our lives.

Sometimes, He'd like to take it slow and we feel He's wasting valuable time; at other times, when He starts taking it a bit fast, we complain that we can't keep up. But He's not asking us to. How can we be complaining of not being able to keep up when He is carrying us on His shoulders? The truth is, we could never live holy lives without the grace and strength that comes from God.

When it's bitter, we need His strength to hold on; when it sweet, we need His grace to stay put. We must let God do the sanctification; it's His job, not ours.
